Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Assemblies

What is FBG?

One of the most commonly used optical sensors is the Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG), which reflects a wavelength of light. This depends on external influences such as temperature, pressure or expansion fluctuations on the FBG fiber. FBGs are manufactured using holographic interferences or a phase mask, which permanently change the refractive index of the fiber depending on the light intensity. This refractive index is referred to as the Fiber Bragg Grating.

When a broadband light beam is sent to an FBG, induced reflections of certain wavelengths of the coupled light occur at the points with the manipulated refractive index. When the FBG is subject to external mechanical stress, the spectrum of the reflected wavelength range shifts, meaning that the mechanical stress on the fiber can be measured and interpreted.

Advantages of Fiber Bragg Grating based measuring systems

FBG's optical scanning solves many of the problems associated with electrical systems. By using light instead of power and standard fiber optics instead of copper wire, long distances can be covered with multiple FBG sensors integrated into one cable. The size, weight, EMC compatibility and complexity of a measurement system also play an important role.

Optical scanning is ideal for applications where conventional electrical sensors, such as foil strain gauges, thermocouples and vibrating wires, have proven to be ineffective or difficult to use due to difficult environmental conditions and/or long distances between sensor and device.

Diamond as a partner for assemblies and integrations

In order for FBGs to function properly and for the optical signals to be reliable, it is essential that the FBGs are equipped with the connector types that are appropriate for the respective situation. When selecting the correct connector type, the mechanical stress and optical requirements must be taken into account.

Diamond can fall back on its extensive knowledge in the field of FBG sensor assemblies as well as in the development and manufacturing of sensor packaging, thus offering a wide range of ideal solutions for your requirements.
